Exploring holistic approaches for childhood

Over the last few decades, many varied holistic educational approaches have emerged. Holistic approaches to teaching and learning to recognise the connectedness of the mind, body and soul. An integrated, holistic approach to teaching and learning also focuses on connections to the real world. A holistic approach fastens a child’s capacity to understand and respect the natural environment and the interdependence between people, plants, animals and the land.

When early childhood educators take a holistic approach, they pay attention to the kid’s physical, personal, social, emotional and social wellbeing as well as the cognitive aspects of learning.

Team Kshitij’s H3 program (Head, Heart and Hand) comprises the following tests which help in the development of children. Let us have a look at the sub-divisions of the H3 program.

  1. First is the DMIT. This test comes under the Head section. It is a test which analyses learning style, intellectual, emotional skills, creative quotient, personality type, memory pattern, qualitative and quantitative strengths and weaknesses which eventually lead to clarity while choosing career options.
  2. Second is One on One Counselling. This also comes under Head section. After the DMIT reports arrive, a session will be conducted with the parents. They will be appropriately guided on aspects such as academic as well as the non-academic front.
  3. Then comes the Parenting Seminar. This is a part of the Heart section. The seminar will address a broad audience engaging in concepts like active parenting and passive parenting. The seminar will talk about the ‘need’ to parent and the ‘detachment’ principle.
  4. Next is the Community Service. This piece focuses on the value of GIVING. It focuses on nurturing the virtue of not always thinking about self which is a big scene in today’s times.
  5. Nature Trail, a part of the Head, Heart and Hand section is next. This outdoor program is programmed to see how outdoors reflect a change in the mindset and thinking of individuals.
  6. Play, Laugh, Connect- Session is up next. This piece of the program aims to bring fun in parents and children’s life through activities. This session will bring together the head, heart and hand of both parents and kids in a space that is free from fear, judgement and competition, thus allowing them to express themselves.

While this can at first seems overwhelming, educators can find small opportunities in their day to day practice to incorporate and extend ideas that promote connection, community and wellbeing.
